details
Luang Pu Thuad amulet from Wat Dee Luang, Sathing Phra District, Songkhla Province. This particular piece is a rare print, featuring the image of Wat Tani Samostorn on the front, a stupa on the back, and three dots.
It was made in 1962 (B.E. 2505). It was consecrated by Ajarn Tim of Wat Chang Hai in this ceremony.
Wat Dee Luang has a connection to Luang Pu Thuad because Somphara Chuang, the first abbot of Wat Dee Luang, was his uncle and the one who ordained Luang Pu Thuad as a novice monk.
In 1962 (B.E. 2505), Ajarn Lan Kanchano, the abbot at the time, created four types of amulets and Buddha images: herbal amulets (small and large prints), clay and herbal Buddha images, coins, and small ancient cast images (some made of powder mixed with lacquer). This amulet is one of them. This Luang Pu Thuad amulet from Wat Dee Luang is made from a mixture of old powders from the 2497 BE (1954 CE) Luang Pu Thuad amulet and numerous other auspicious materials, including:
1. 108 types of herbs, categorized into three types:
- Herbs for power (authority)
- Herbs for protection
- Herbs for charm and popularity
2. Herbs with medicinal properties for treating various ailments such as flatulence, poisonous animal bites, all types of hemorrhoids, and pneumonia.
3. Sacred soil, rocks, and minerals such as:
- Soil from his birthplace, where his placenta was buried, where his cradle was tied, where his walking stick was placed, and the soil from the temple's main hall.
- Soil from the Bua Somphan Dam
in Amphoe Chuang. - Soil from the Huai Lamphaya stream. The clay used in the amulet comes from various sources: the Gandharva clay from the summit of Khao Lamphaya
, the Ra-o rock from Kanchanaburi
, the Nompha rock , the Huai Yen
mineral, the Khlai Chueat and Khlai Srimahapho
minerals, and the sacred powder from four (some texts say nine) temples.
The amulet was consecrated in two ceremonies: the first was the printing ceremony at Wat Ton Liap, the place where Luang Pu's placenta was buried, near his birthplace, on Friday, the 15th day of the waxing moon, in the Year of the Tiger, 2505 BE (1962 CE).
Nineteen monks participated in the chanting ceremony.
The second was a grand consecration ceremony at Wat Dee Luang on Friday, the 4th day of the waning moon, in the 6th month, 2505 BE (1962 CE). 108 renowned monks from southern Thailand participated, including Ajarn Tim, Ajarn Nong, Luang Pho Mun of Wat Khao Daeng Ok, Luang Pho Than Nian of Wat Ton Liap, etc.
The consecration ceremony lasted seven days and seven nights, with monks rotating among the participants. During the ceremony, a large, bright light was observed on the temple roof. After the consecration ceremony was completed, miraculously, some of the amulets were distributed to those who contributed to the merit-making. (Some say that some amulets were kept at the temple, stored in jars in the attic of the main chapel.)
Later, around 2007, the chapel was renovated because of a leaking roof. The abbot found the remaining amulets in the jars and offered them to the public for worship to raise funds for the temple's repairs in 2008. The amulets are mostly black or dark gray in color. Some have a high concentration of minerals and stones, resulting in a dark brown to almost black color with clearly visible minerals. Some amulets contain a higher proportion of herbs, with a layer of herbs covering them, appearing as brown or eggshell-white patches. The amulets made of herbs are mostly indistinct in their design due to the large number produced. They are considered to be good amulets with a good ceremony and good materials.
