Phra Yod Thong, Wat Chamao, Nakhon Si Thammarat, bronze material...original condition from the crypt...rare
Phra Yod Thong, Wat Chamao, Nakhon Si Thammarat, selected beautifully. Original condition from the crypt. Early Ayutthaya art. The area is very popular now.
The crypt was broken in April 2011.
An ancient temple in the middle of Nakhon Si Thammarat city. The ancient Buddha image was moved for restoration. Under the base, a large gold amulet crypt was found. The abbot has already stored it in a safe place.
Reporters reported that at Wat Chamao, Ratchadamnoen Road, Mueang District, Nakhon Si Thammarat Province, the atmosphere inside the temple in front is restoring important Buddha images of the temple that have been around since ancient times. The discovery was found in the area where the Buddha image was originally located, which was located at the back of the temple. It was moved to be renovated and installed in front of the temple. It is a Buddha image in the Sri Lankan art style, with a lap width of about 3 meters and a height of about 4 meters, which has been beautifully restored to its original shape.
Phra Palat Kasem Khemjitto, abbot of Wat Chamao, Mueang District, Nakhon Si Thammarat Province, revealed that the discovery occurred around April. Originally, the villagers called this Buddha image Luang Pho Sung, with a lap width of about 3 meters. The history has been investigated and an inscription was found at the base of the Buddha image, stating that it was built in 1079 and was originally enshrined in the area of Wat Pratu Khian, an ancient temple of Nakhon Si Thammarat since ancient times. It was washed down at an unknown time.
Later, in 2458 or almost 100 years ago, His Holiness Sirithammamunee, the abbot of Nakhon Si Thammarat Province, ordered the area of 3 temples to be combined, namely Wat Pratu Khian, Wat Samitthan, and Wat Mo or Wat Chamao, into a single temple area, which is the current Wat Chamao. This Buddha image, which was originally in Wat Pratu Khian, has since become Wat Chamao.
Efforts to move the Luang Pho Sung Buddha image to the front of the temple for the general public to pay homage have been ongoing for 9 abbots until now. Originally, it was an old Buddha image that had deteriorated over time.
During the past 3-4 abbots, disasters occurred every time they were moved, namely:
1. Lightning strikes;
2. A storm caused the head to be cut off.
3. Accidents with the moving workers, until it was neglected and no one dared to do it.
In 1973, Phra Khru Sutticharee had a request to move the Buddha statue, but it turned out that he passed away. Later, Phra Khru Ka Kaew asked to build a zinc structure to protect from the sun and rain until Phra Khru Ka Kaew passed away. Phra Khru Sutthawarakhun wanted to move it again, but it didn’t take long for him to pass away again, said the abbot of Wat Chamao.
Phra Palat Kasem Khemjitto, the abbot of Wat Chamao, continued that during his time, he intended to maintain the building and restore the monastery to make it beautiful. Therefore, he proceeded again by setting up offerings and praying to move the Buddha statue in front of the temple.
However, there were another disaster:
1. There was a strong wind and lightning.
2. The workers had an accident and caused damage. After that, he stopped.
Later, he prayed again, this time intending that if it could not be moved, he would have to break it down and move it. It turned out that the wind blew very hard and he used a crane to move it. When it was finished, it miraculously rained only from the end of the temple to the front of the temple.
After moving, I quickly restored it to its original shape. But at night, I had a vision telling me to go and get something to keep. At 1 am, I went to see what I saw according to the vision. I found a Buddha statue, amulets made of gold, silver, and many gems. The Buddha statue and amulets are in the Sri Lankan art style. I believe that they are Buddha statues and amulets from the time the Phra Borommathat Chedi was built and some were offered as offerings to the Buddha. Some were kept in this temple at the base of the Buddha statue. At present, some are kept in a safe place. We will consider later what to do with the Buddha statue and the items from the base of the Buddha statue. Phra Palat Kasem Khemjitto, the abbot of Wat Chamao, said finally.

The discovery of the "Early Ayutthaya Art Phra Yod Thong", a Phra Kru Mueang Kon, Wat Chamao, Ratchadamnoen Road, Mueang District, Nakhon Si Thammarat Province, in late April 2011, was a place where an important Buddha image was enshrined. Originally, the villagers called this Buddha image "Luang Pho Sung", with a lap width of approximately 3 meters. The history of the discovery was investigated and an inscription was found at the base of the Buddha image stating that it was built in the year 1079 and was originally enshrined at the area of Wat Pratu Khian, an ancient temple in Nakhon Si Thammarat. It was found under the base of the principal Buddha image located at the back of the temple and was moved to be renovated and enshrined in the front of the temple. It is a Buddha image in the Sri Lankan art style, with a lap width of approximately 3 meters and a height of approximately 4 meters, which was beautifully renovated to its original form.
It reveals a curse that whoever attempts to move it will experience disasters such as storms, lightning, and accidents. It was stated that 9 abbots died mysteriously. "Phra Kasem Khemajito" dared to try something but was successful in moving it. There was a stir about the gold Buddha image and many diamonds under the base.
Reporters reported that on August 14, 2011, at Wat Chamao, Ratchadamnoen Road, Tambon Tha Wang, Amphoe Mueang, Nakhon Si Thammarat Province, a large number of people flocked to see the installation of an ancient Buddha statue in the Chiang Saen Lanna style, almost 1,500 years old, which Prakesom Khemjitto, the abbot, moved from its old location at the back of the temple to a new location in the courtyard in front of the temple, along Ratchadamnoen Road. It is currently undergoing renovations by covering the original Buddha statue with cement, but it is not yet complete. It was also found that under the original base where the Buddha statue was installed, there were small Buddha statues with lap widths of 3 inches, 5 inches, and 7 inches, as well as many Lanna style amulets made of gold and silver, some of which were damaged and had their heads broken. In addition, many valuable gems and jewels were found, causing people who heard the news to continuously travel to see it.
As for the large Buddha statue that was moved to a new location, it is approximately 3 meters wide and 4 meters high. It was restored and installed to its original beautiful shape. However, for over 100 years, there have been rumours that this Buddha image is sacred and has many mysteries. If anyone tries to move it, various disasters will occur, such as lightning, a storm that the ancients called “wind of the head”, or a serious accident, which has made it impossible to move it, even though the 9 abbots of Wat Chamao have tried all along. Whether they are monks or laypeople, they have all died mysteriously. The fact that Phra Kasem Khemajito, the current abbot, dared to move this Buddha image has caused widespread interest and criticism from the general public, and there is concern that Phra Kasem, the abbot, will also die.
Regarding this matter, Phra Palat Kasem Khemjitto, abbot of Wat Chamao, Mueang District, Nakhon Si Thammarat Province, revealed that this Buddha image, which the villagers have passed down as “Luang Pho Sung,” is a Buddha image in the Chiang Saen Lankawong art style, with a lap width of approximately 3 meters. The Buddha image in the Chiang Saen Lankawong art style must be in a sitting position only, that is, sitting cross-legged with the right leg over the left leg. From the research on its history, it is estimated that it was created in the early Chiang Saen period by Sri Lankan craftsmen. In particular, there is evidence from the inscription found under the base of the Buddha image that it was created in 1079 B.E. If counted up to this year, this Buddha image is 1,475 years old. It was originally enshrined in the area of Wat Pratu Khian, which is an ancient temple of Nakhon Si Thammarat since ancient times. Later, in 1915 B.E., or almost 100 years ago, Phra Thep Thep Sirithammamunee or Phra Rattanathatmuni (Muang Rattanathatthera), the abbot of Nakhon Si Thammarat Province, He ordered the consolidation of the areas of 3 temples, namely Wat Pratu Khian, Wat Samitthan, and Wat Moli or Wat Chamao, into one area and became the current Wat Chamao.
“This Buddha image was originally enshrined in the area of Wat Pratu Khian, which has become the current area of Wat Chamao. Every abbot of Wat Chamao saw that the “Luang Pho Sung” Buddha image was an important ancient Buddha image, so they wanted to move the Luang Pho Sung Buddha image to the front of the temple, which is a suitable spot. People passing by will have the opportunity to stop by to pay homage for good fortune conveniently. In the past, there have been continuous attempts by 9 abbots to move it, but they were unsuccessful, causing the old Buddha image to deteriorate over time. It is well known to the public that the efforts of the previous abbots have always led to disasters, that every time they were going to move it, incredible phenomena would occur. Sometimes, lightning would strike violently, sometimes, a strong storm would strike out of nowhere, or accidents would occur with the technicians or workers who were moving it,” said
Phra Palat Kasem Khemjitto, the abbot of Wat Chamao. He added that since no one dared to do it, it was neglected until in 1973, Phra Khru Suttichari As the abbot, he had a wish to move the Buddha image, Luang Pho Sung, but he suddenly passed away. Later, when Phra Khru Ka Kaew was the abbot, he asked to build a building with a zinc roof to protect from the sun and rain, but Phra Khru Ka Kaew also passed away. During Phra Khru Suthiworakun’s time as the abbot, he had another wish to move it, and not long after, he passed away again, so no one dared to move it or touch the Buddha image, “Luang Pho Sung” again.
“Until the time I became the abbot in 2010, I intended to restore and maintain the buildings in Wat Chamao to be beautiful and pleasing to the eyes. Therefore, I decided to move it again. Before moving it, I set up offerings, made offerings, and prayed to remove the Buddha statue and place it in front of the temple. However, there were many obstacles, such as strong winds and lightning. While the workers were injured, I ordered the move to be stopped. Then, in April, I prayed to move it and intended that if it could not be moved, I would have to destroy it. Then I started moving the “Phluang Pho Sung” Buddha statue for the first time. While moving it using a crane, there was a strong wind, but it was successfully moved. However, an incredible event occurred when heavy rain fell only inside the temple. It was truly amazing,”
the abbot of Wat Chamao revealed, “When it was successfully moved, a pavilion was built in the courtyard in front of the temple. And has accelerated the restoration to the original shape, including building a replica of the Buddha image “Luang Pho Sung” with a lap width of 1 meter and a height of 1.5 meters, enshrined in the pavilion below. Then at 1 am in the middle of the night, I had a dream that I would go and get the things under the base of the Buddha image to keep. So I got up and walked to inspect the original enshrined spot. There I found a Buddha image and amulets made of gold and silver, as well as many diamonds. All of them are in the Chiang Saen Lankawong art style. From the research, it is believed that both the Buddha image and the amulets were likely created during the period of the construction of the Phra Borommathat Chedi.
“At that time, gold, silver Buddha images, and valuables were offered as offerings to the Lord Buddha and the Phra Borommathat Chedi. Some of the remaining were enshrined at Wat Pratu Khian, Wat Samitthan, and Wat Moli, until the three temples were combined to become Wat Chamao. And the gold Buddha image, silver Buddha image, and valuables were buried under the base of the “Luang Pho Sung” Buddha image until it was moved and excavated in April. At present, I have kept one in a safe place. And we will consider later what to do with the gold, silver Buddha statues and valuables that were taken from the base of the Buddha statue," said Phra Palat Kasem Khemjitto, abbot of Wat Chamao, in conclusion.
