details

Phra Hu Yan, old crypt, large print with giant face, Wat Phra Sri Lopburi, used condition, basic authenticity. If we talk about the sitting Buddha print of Lopburi, the number one must be Phra Hu Yan of Lopburi. If it is the number one Buddha print, it must be Phra Ruang with cloth pattern on the back. Phra Hu Yan originated at Wat Phra Sri Rattana Mahathat. It was first discovered around 2450, which we call “old crypt Buddha”. The first discovered Buddha will have a black surface with a little white mercury in the crevices of the Buddha image. If it has been used, the mercury will disappear. Later, some were discovered, but not many. Until 2508, many were discovered in the area of the small pagoda in front of the prang of Wat Phra Sri Rattana Mahathat, which is called “new crypt”. Some people assume that Phra Hu Yan from the old crypt and Phra Hu Yan from the new crypt were created at different times, that is, the old crypt was created before the new crypt. However, I think that if the Buddha images were created in different prints, the prints and defects of the Buddha images must be different. However, these old crypt and new crypt Buddha images are the same block. And from the places where they were found, as mentioned above, the surface of the Buddha image may be different. Some people may object that they may have used the old mold to make a new Buddha image, which is possible because if the mold is made of bronze, when left for a long time, it will be corroded by rust until it erodes. When the Buddha image is remade, the image will not be perfect and will have defects as rust eats the mold. However, the new Buddha image is clear, even clearer than the old Buddha image. However, if the mold is made of clay or other materials, it will erode over time. The Buddha image will not be clear. If the mold is carved again, the size of the Buddha image or the defects will definitely be different from before. There are many molds of the broken Hu Yan Buddha images: large mold (called the large giant face mold), medium mold, small mold, double lotus mold, double lotus radius mold, and tiny mold. However, there are very few. If we talk about the Buddha's virtues, the Hu Yan Buddha image is very famous for its invulnerability according to the Khmer style. In terms of mercy, it is second to none.
