SINGAPORE — At least 41 people have been duped by a job scam involving the sale of movie tickets since November.

The police in a press release on Thursday (Nov 25) said that the victims have reported losses of at least $$203,000 after signing up to buy and resell movie tickets linked to a company called Filmgo.

It added that scammers would approach victims on messaging applications such as MiChat and WeChat with purported job offers allowing them to earn commissions.

Victims would then be directed to sign up for accounts on the ‘Filmgo’ websites provided by the scammers and would also be asked to download mobile applications to use the services.

These victims would be required to top-up their ‘Filmgo’ accounts in order to buy and sell movie tickets and earn commissions, and the scammers would provide victims with bank accounts belonging to unknown individuals for the payment to be made.

As their ‘Filmgo’ accounts would indicate the commissions they have received after completing jobs, victims would be convinced that their work and commissions were legitimate, said the police.

Victims eventually realised they were scammed after they were unable to withdraw the money from their ‘Filmgo’ accounts.

The police on Thursday advised members of the public not to accept job offers that offer lucrative returns for minimal effort, download applications from unverified sources or send money to persons they do not know or have not met in person.
