In a Weibo post shared last night (Dec 19), the 45-year-old singer said he lived in fear and was constantly blackmailed by his ex-wife throughout their marriage and that her claim of not wanting his money is not true.

It’s been more than a day of silence from Wang Leehom following Lee Jinglei’s damning exposé on his alleged infidelities. The 45-year-old singer finally issued a statement on Dec 19, where he refuted all of his 35-year-old ex-wife's claims and called the entire episode “a horrible and immensely painful nightmare”.

He explained that he took so long to respond because he felt conflicted as “refuting so many untruths wouldn’t look good on the mother of my three children”, but decided to speak up as “everyone will believe [her words] as the truth” if he did not.

They have three children together: daughters Jiali, seven, Jiana, five, and son Jiayao, three.

Leehom wrote, “My responsibility to society is to respond to each and every one [of the accusations], but I also had to think of how the mother of my three children would feel. This is very difficult [and] there will be times when I’m not able to do things perfectly. I apologise in advance for these flaws. I don’t want to hurt her, and more so my children. They are all my family, my everything and my greatest love.

I want to make this point extremely clear: I can say with confidence that I’ve never been unfaithful during our marriage.”

    He shared that he got to know Jinglei, who was then known by her Japanese name Michiko Nishimura, during a 2003 concert but didn’t keep in contact with her for about a decade.

    Leehom attached a screenshot of an email exchange that he had with Jinglei in 2011, where he mentioned that he “[hadn’t] seen [her] in forever” and she called him “stranger” to support his claim.

    Leehom continued, “We got married on Nov 27, 2013 and we separated in Aug 5, 2019. In the five years and eight months that we were together, I lived in fear [and was constantly] blackmailed and threatened. She got pregnant soon after we started dating. I was surprised but happy because I really wanted children, but we weren’t at the stage that we were discussing marriage just yet.”

    “But on that day, she was especially worked up and said, ‘If you don’t get married with me today, I’ll disappear and change my name. You’ll never see your child that I have in my womb. Don’t think of looking for me because you’ll never find me. (These words are recorded as part of a marriage counselling session we had in 2016.) I was afraid but I knew that she was serious, so I said that we’d register our marriage on that very day. It was unthinkable that I’d never be able to see my child. I agreed because she was so worked up was also getting physical. That very day, we registered our marriage in New York. I thought that day would be the most terrifying day in my life. I never thought that it would pale in comparison to today.”

    “In the five years and eight months that we were married, I admit that there was no end to our problems. From March 2014, we started seeing a psychologist who specialises in marriage counselling. We’ve seen five of them and I regret that none of them truly helped our marriage. I hope that the both of us can face this reality bravely. I sincerely wish for the best for Michiko Nishimura, and hope that our combined efforts will allow us to be able to live amicably as a family after our marriage ends.”

    “We started talking about divorce in December 2020. [She] has also told the mediator that she would tell the media things that would destroy [me] if I don’t agree to her conditions. (The mediator says they have an audio recording, but I haven’t heard it). In short, what Lee Jinglei said about not wanting a single cent from me is not true. Originally, she asked for 200mil yuan (S$42.9mil)."

    "The final agreement that both of us have signed on states that she’ll be receiving 150mil yuan (S$32.2mil), including half of a Los Angeles property and half of a joint investment account. She will also receive monthly living expenses of 210K yuan (S$45K) and I will pay for a nanny, driver, live-in helper and provide a personal car. She will also get to stay in the Taipei house without having to pay rent [for] 18 years, and so on. All this was in the hopes that Jinglei would be able to live comfortably, but she’s always felt that it was not enough.”

    “However, money is not the main issue. The most important thing right now is that we have three children. The reason I’m posting this publicly right now is that I want to use the one and only avenue that I can communicate with Jinglei to say this: Please, whatever it is, direct [your anger] towards me. I’m willing to face all your requirements and rage. What goes on the internet will never go away and you’ve already used it to destroy me. Please, don’t let more of [our fights] become recorded online. Our three kids will have more to face while they grow up, and I’m sincerely pleading with you to let me see them.”

    “Lee Jinglei, I regret that I failed to become the good husband that you wanted. As a public figure, I would like to apologise to everyone for not managing my marriage well. I sincerely apologise to those who were unwittingly dragged into this. I want to apologise to my parents, and want to thank you for the letter that you wrote last night. This son of yours has caused you trouble because I was unable to manage my marriage. I’m very apologetic! I’m sorry!”

    "Lastly, I’m not as good with words as Jinglei is, but as previously mentioned, I will refute all the untrue allegations in her 5000 word essay in another post."
