Hawker learns expensive lesson about payment platform app

AN IPOH hawker who downloaded a payment platform app which offered attractive rebates has been scammed.

The 40-year-old, who only wanted to be known as Lee, said RM400 from his bank account, which was linked to the platform, was transferred to another account earlier this month.

“At midnight on April 10, I checked my bank account and found the sum had been transferred to a company.

“RM10 had also been deducted from one of my e-wallets, ” he told a press conference organised by Canning assemblyman Jenny Choy in Ipoh.

“Fortunately, the bank account did not have much money as I only put in a small amount to limit my online purchases, ” said Lee who lodged a report on April 10 at the Tambun police station.

“I have already deleted the mobile app and called the bank to block my account and cancel my credit card, ” he added.

Lee said he came across a post about the platform — which offered rebates when paying utility bills — on social media.

“The cashback rates were between 4.3% and 6.5% for different utility companies.

“I got in touch with one S Chan and was instructed to instal the app, ” he said, adding that it was his first time using such a platform.

“I was required to input my credit card and banking details into the app.”

Lee said since the incident, he had tried to call Chan again but his calls were rejected.

“I realised I was cheated so I hope the public will be more careful when installing such payment apps, ” he said. — By IVAN LOH
