An 80-year-old man has been arrested in his hometown in Lop Buri for allegedly deceiving people into buying fake amulets.

Pol Maj Gen Charn Wimonsri, acting commissioner of the Crime Suppression Division (CSD), said yesterday that police had apprehended Piyabut Prasarnkijjawattana, accused of fraud, in Muang district.

He was speaking at a press conference at the CSD office yesterday where he announced the arrest. Police did not say when the arrest was made.

Mr Piyabut is wanted on a warrant issued by Nakhon Pathom Municipal Court in November 2010 for fraudulent activities in real-estate transactions, police said.

The suspect is also wanted on arrest warrants issued by Phetchaburi Provincial Court dated Oct 26 and by Chai Nat Provincial Court dated April 12 of the same year for fraud, police added.

Police searched Mr Piyabut's house in Tha Wung district and found more than 30 Thai amulets which were seized as evidence, CSD deputy commissioner Pol Col Phantana Nutchanat said at the press conference.

Mr Piyabut allegedly confessed to police that he bought amulets from shops in Tha Phachan and buried them in the grounds of a temple in Muang district.

He fabricated a story about unearthing sacred amulets, claiming they were more than 200 years old, with the intention of enticing believers into buying them.

An investigator who interviewed Mr Piyabut said the suspect told him that he advertised the amulets in a local newspaper on Jan 29, selling them for around 5,000-10,000 baht each.

Mr Piyabut also confessed to police that he had colluded with Juea Singtokaew, arrested earlier, to entice potential customers into buying mortgaged land claiming the owner wanted to sell, later stealing the mortgage payments, police said.

Pol Col Phantana urged Mr Piyabut's victims to contact police as part of the ongoing investigation.
