Remembering Inspector Lim Chun Siong (29 December 1976 - 9 March 2022)

A 23-year career with the Singapore Police Force

Life was not kind to Chun Siong.

He was only 12 when his father passed away. This meant that he had to grow up quickly and shoulder the responsibility of taking care of his mother and his younger brother.

Despite losing his father in his PSLE year, he still managed to pass his examinations with flying colours.

He was only 12, but he knew that his mother was his responsibility. He took over the role of his father.

He did not want his mother to work so hard, so he juggled his studies and helped out at his mother’s drinks stall. This went on for seven years until he graduated with a Diploma in Marine Engineering from Singapore Polytechnic in 1998.

Never once did he ask for money from his mother or his extended family.

Chun Siong always wanted to be a police officer. A year after he graduated from his polytechnic studies, he joined the Singapore Police Force. In his 23-year career with the force, he earned a total of 17 awards, commendations and medals.

He scaled the ranks to assume the rank of an Inspector.

Never once did he forget how he made it one step at a time. He knew how hard it was to be in the Singapore Police Force. He asked that he be addressed as “Xiong” instead of “Sir”.

Here was a humble, reliable and gentle person. His character was one of integrity; he valued the camaraderie and the “brotherhood” that he had the privilege to partake in.

In 1999, with a firm conviction, he told his cousin that he wanted to join the Singapore Police Force. He never looked back.

For more than half of his life, he wore the uniform with pride and understood the trust that Singaporeans had in a police officer.

At the same time, Chun Siong was a gentle giant, who was filial and, though soft-spoken, was also a man with a big heart.

In fact, he was looking forward to his promotion as an assistant superintendent – in fact, those were his last words to his cousin. A recognition of the hard work for the past 23 years serving Singaporeans and the community, no less.

Chun Siong was also looking forward to marrying his sweetheart, but alas, he left no last words for her, his mother and cousin, all of whom he loved dearly. He died in his sleep.

He had repeatedly delayed his marriage until he was certain that his mother had sufficient monies for her retirement. He placed his mother’s well-being before his own happiness and interests.

Here was a focused, hardworking, and filial son, respected by one and all in the Singapore Police Force.

Throughout his 46 years of life, he never once had his loved ones worry about him. His cousin, Clement, recalled that even when he was bullied in school, he did not inform him as he knew that his beloved cousin would take it upon himself to defend him. He did not want to trouble him. That speaks volumes of his character, a kind and tolerable soul, who was gone too soon.

Now, he is at rest, and he can put down all the responsibilities that he has been shouldering since he was 12.

His family, including his cousin, is heartbroken. Their loss is unspeakable. If there was one thing that they wanted him to know, it is that they loved him very much.

Clement, his cousin, wants him to know that “my brother, you are remarkable, and you have done it”. Indeed, through his sheer willpower, he overcame the many adversities in his life.

He had put his mother and loved ones first. Tragically, he never had the chance to say his farewell.

Today, we wish him well and send him on his way. He can finally rest.

He was never a person who gives and accepts gifts. But little did he realise that his life was, in fact, the most important gift to his loved ones, and what a beautiful gift he was.

---

Death Kopitiam would like to sincerely thank Chun Siong’s cousin, Mr Clement Lim, for his intimate sharing with us.

It was candid, intimate and excruciatingly painful.

We ask that Chun Siong’s loved ones carry him close in their hearts as they navigate life without his presence.

We hope that this simple but loving tribute can go some way in remembering what a remarkable person and gentle giant he was, and, in turn, offer his loved ones some solace in this darkest of times.

Chun Siong was a gift to his family, yesterday, today, and tomorrow. May he rest in eternal peace, without any worries.
